Overview
Dr Joe Helou is an attending Cardiac Surgeon at the Cardiovascular Center of the Centre Hospitalier de l'Universite de Montreal.
He is Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Montreal.
Background
He received his medical degree with honours Magna Cum Laude from the University of Ottawa in 1991 (Ottawa, Canada), his General Surgery degree from McGill University in 1996 (Montreal, Canada), and his specialist certification in Cardiac Surgery from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in 1999 (Ottawa, Canada). He then pursued further and sub-specialized training in heart failure, mechanical cardio-respiratory assist and advanced cardiac surgery at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, Ohio, USA).
He is board certified in cardiac surgery and has been in academic practice in Montreal since 2000.
Dr. Helou’s faculty appointments at the University of Montreal are with the Department of Surgery, where he is Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery.
Aside from his busy academic practice, he has keen interest in the medico-legal aspects of medicine and has done many expert reports in the field of cardiac surgery. As medical expert, Dr Helou will provide opinion evidence that is fair, objective and unbiased. His role will be to explain to the court the medical facts of the case. He will provide opinion evidence that is solely related to the matters that are within his area of expertise.

Dr. Helou's clinical interests are centered on Valvular Heart Disease & Endocarditis, Surgery of the thoracic aorta and Aortic Root as well as complex cases.
He has keen interest in surgical outcomes.
